Joel,
Well, the project is finally completed…. The deck cover works very well and for the first time since 1998, I can sit out and enjoy my yard at any hour of the day. When building my 500 sq. ft. deck, I investigated various alternatives for an overhead covering that could provide total shade for me while permitting good air circulation, attractive appearance, and the option for sun during the winter.
While natural vines could provide many of these requirements, pruning an 11' x 35' arbor on an annual basis was not what I had in mind. A lattice work cover is restricted by our city code to 50% coverage with open space between being equal to the lattice width. This is done to prevent problems with snow loads. Any greater coverage requires the same structural support as a normal roof.
I can't even remember now how I found your web site but as soon as I saw your FLEX?fence ® product I knew it would work for my application. I felt the price was reasonable given the fact that I could do the work myself, fulfill my special requirements, and have a very unique deck cover which adds to the value of my home. I checked with our city Building Code & Inspection group and they were satisfied that all code requirements were met.
Although this was a large project by many homeowner standards, it was actually quite easy once broken down into manageable sized tasks and thanks to FLEX?fence ® easy to install hardware kit. I'm glad to see the product offered now through our local Budget Home Center in Longmont, Colorado and wish you success with it here in the West.
