the yard cried out, "I need an update"
by Bill Brioux
Up went a stunning cedar fence, topped with Flex-fence louver fence panels (to order hardware kits, see page 206). "It's a do-it-yourself project and very, very easy," says Joel Meyers of Flex-fence. "Unlike lattice toppings, louvres give you a variety of looks and the panels can be opened for air flow or sunshine, or closed for privacy."
The Coopers plan to use a similar Flex-fence louvred system to eventually add a cedar pergola over sliding patio doors, to provide some welcome shade in the backyard.
Before the fence was assembled, the top boards were run through a router, which provided a decorative element. Next, three protective coats of semitransparent stain were applied. As a bonus, because the louvered rails open and close, they can be stained from within your own property. The fence posts were then topped with copper fence caps, coated to keep their natural shine intact through the seasons.
